An unusual day of work for North Bay firefighters on holiday Monday.

Crews responded to two different fires at a home located at 20 Passmore, one at noon on Monday and another at 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders says crews responded quickly to the noon blaze where they found a substantial fire in the kitchen of the home.

“Firefighters entered the home and very quickly extinguished the fire,” stated Saunders.

Then just before 2 a.m. firefighters were called to the residence for another fire.

“This time firefighters were faced with a very significant fire in the crawlspace of the home,” stated Saunders.

Saunders says the second fire was more significant and more challenging to extinguish.

“Firefighters worked very hard and successfully managed the incident but not before significant damage had occurred,” he said.

Saunders says the fire is being deemed as suspicious.

“The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to assist in determining the cause of the fire and will be working with the North Bay Police Service,” said Saunders.

No one was injured in either fire as the investigation continues.
