Fire damages Lakeshore semi

'One of the bedrooms was on fire so I made sure everyone was out, then I called the fire department'

A fire early this morning in a semi-detached home at 776 Lakeshore Dr. was quickly extinguished by fire crews, with no injuries to occupants.

Alisha Hudon, a worker at the group home, called the fire in at 6:15.

"One of the bedrooms was on fire so I made sure everyone was out, then I called the fire department."

Hudon says there were four residents on the south side of the building, with a husband and wife in the other side. All are safe.

The building is rented by Nipissing Mental Health Housing and Support Services and cares for people with mental health and addiction services.

Mike Bechard, Deputy Fire Chief told BayToday that crews responded from Station three in West Ferris.

"Crews arrived very quickly. The fire was put out very quickly. We are moving forward with doing an investigation with police and the OFM (Ontario Fire Marshall).

"We used a positive pressure attack that we've used in the past and that helps us to keep the building clean as much as possible and keep the hot gases out of the building. It makes the fire very quick."

Bechard expects it will be mostly surface damage inside and the fire did not extend beyond the bedroom.

Lakeshore Drive was down to one lane, but fully reopened around 7:30.
