Finished charging your cell phone? Here's some valuable advice

The burning process left a small deposit of white plastic on the hardwood floor

This unattended cell phone charging cord could have started a fire in North Bay this afternoon.

Most of us leave our charger in the outlet when we've finished charging our phones.

But that almost caused a fire in North Bay today.

At 12:46 p.m. today North Bay Fire Crews rushed to a home on Princess St. E. and discovered that a cell phone charging cord experienced an electrical failure and was burning.

"The cell phone charging cord was plugged into a ‘power bar’ and the power bar was plugged into a living room electrical outlet, however, the cord was not plugged into the SAMSUNG Galaxy S6 cell phone," stated Captain Randy Vezina. "The end of the cord was simply laying on the hardwood floor."

The homeowner said that the cord was always plugged into the power bar and when he detected the smell of ‘electrical burning’ he discovered that the end of the cord was disfigured with obvious signs of burning and called the fire department.

The burning process left a small deposit of white plastic on the hardwood floor.

Had the cord been resting on the couch it might have started a fire.

"The cause of the incident is attributed to an electrical defect within the device," added Vezina.

His advice, don't leave any cell phone charging cord plugged in while unattended.

Darlene Belanger, in the BayToday comments section confirmed it was an original equipment manufactured cord.

"This was my daughters charger and it's not from the dollar store. It is a Samsung charger that came with her cell phone. The surge protector was also not from the dollar store and had two other items plugged in that were not affected."
