Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is reminding residents the annual flu season will soon be upon us, and that a flu shot is one important step toward trying to help prevent serious illness.

Fedeli rolled up his sleeve and got vaccinated today at the Shoppers Drug Mart location on Cassells St. in North Bay.

“It’s my belief that everyone should seriously consider getting the flu shot, but I also respect the right of someone to make their own individual health choice,” said Fedeli.

“However, as a public figure, I am in constant contact with children and seniors and want to make sure I'm inoculated for their benefit and safety.”

Recently, the province announced pharmacists will now be permitted to administer flu shots, and will be paid $7.50 per inoculation, which remains free for the public.

“Pharmacists are very highly educated, well-monitored health care professionals, and are capable of doing the necessary counselling and monitoring required to administer flu shots and improve vaccination rates,” said Fedeli, adding the idea is aimed at easing time and cost pressures in Ontario’s health care sector.

“However, there is much more work to be done in order to ensure that pharmacists and other health professionals are able to utilize the full scope of their training and abilities in their place of work,” said Fedeli.

The Ontario PC party wants to build a patient-centered health care system that eliminates bureaucratic waste and invests in the front lines, Fedeli added.

“We believe we can create a more effective, patient-centered health care system by enabling health care professionals to full scope of practice.”
