North Bay Fire Crews responded to a structure fire early Friday morning that left 1 person with serious injuries and substantial damages to the First Avenue home.

Fire officials say that two fire stations responded to the call that came in just before 1 AM on the 200 block of First Avenue East. They arrived to heavy smoke coming from the first and second floors.

Firefighter pulled two people from the structure while another person jumped from a third floor window. The first person was pulled out of the second story window, however, the search for the second person was hampered by heavy heat and that person was in ‘grave’ condition when firefighters located them. They were taken to hospital.

“It was confirmed that we do have one fatality from this fire unfortunately,” Deputy Fire Chief Brian Hunt told reporters during a news conference outside the building just before noon hour Friday.

Hunt confirmed that the deceased is a woman in her 50's and was located on the second floor.

"I believe the family has been notified at this time, however, there is still some investigation going on at this point."

"They did ladder the building and rescued one occupant on the second level and then they did encounter some very excessive heat and were driven back a few times."

"They went in numerous times to search for the other person who was believed to be in there and they did locate that person I believe on the second level and removed them from the building."

"A post mortem is being conducted Monday in Toronto at the Centre for Forensic Sciences."

The Fire Marshal's Office, City Fire Prevention and North Bay Police continue with the investigation.
