Elderly Blind River wheelchair-bound victim forcibly confined

OPP in Blind River an incident where an elderly person in a wheelchair was forcibly held inside their own apartment.

Today, (January 5,) shortly after midnight, East Algoma OPP responded to an "unwanted person complaint" at an apartment complex on Hudson Street in Blind River.

Police determined the unwanted person wasn't a tenant at the apartment complex but an acquaintance, and had refused to leave the complainant's residence. 

"The elderly wheelchair-bound tenant attempted to leave the apartment several times to get help and was pushed back down forcefully in their wheelchair," stated Constable Bev Gauthier.

The aggressor had left the apartment complex walking in an unknown direction before police arrived, but a half hour later, at 1:30 a.m., the accused was seen walking southbound on a nearby street and arrested.

Eric Duguay, 39, from Blind River is charged with:

  • Forcible confinement
  • Assault
  • Failure to comply with a probation order

Duguay is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on February 1.
