École secondaire catholique Algonquin is celebrating 50 years of existence this year with the theme “I’m coming home… again”.

Founded in 1968, Algonquin is one of the first French-language high-schools in the province of Ontario.

A 20-person committee has been working over the past year in order to organize and plan an alumni reunion which will be held on the weekend of May 17 to 19.

The last Baron’s reunion was held on the occasion of its 30th anniversary. Twenty years later, the organizers hope to surpass the 2 300 participants who attended the last reunion.

Celebrations will begin with an opening ceremony on Friday, May 17, followed by the registration as well as a wine and cheese accompanied by a school visit.

On Saturday there will be a golf tournament, a 5km and 10km race, alumni basketball and volleyball matches as well as a concert by many past participants of the Café Chantant, Algonquin’s musical group which has been performing since the school’s inception.

These activities will be followed, that same evening, with a dinner and dance at the Canadore College and Nipissing University gymnasiums.

The weekend will end on Sunday with a mass at the St. Vincent-de-Paul parish and a pancake breakfast at Algonquin.

Tickets to these events are available up until May 3rd, with an early-bird special ending on March 24. Purchase tickets by visiting the school’s website or by visiting the school at 555 Algonquin Avenue.
