E-cigarettes sales are on the upswing and the local health unit is taking notice.

This comes as the Toronto board of health asks the province to pass an Ontario-wide ban on electronic cigarettes, wherever smoking is prohibited.

Brenda Marshall, the Manager of Healthy Living for the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit says she supports the recommendations of the Toronto Board.

“We’re very supportive. We’re in the process of coming up with our own position statement,” Marshall told BayToday.

“We’re watching Toronto closely and I think they are good recommendations.”

Marshall says the Unit will also be watching the Ministry of Health and Long Term care for its comments.

She says she expects the local health unit to come up with its position statement by the end of next month.

In Toronto, the board is asking the government to ban sales of flavoured e-cigarette products, displays in retail stores and restrict sales to minors.

Meanwhile, Nipising MPP Vic Fedeli is calling on the province to step up.

“We understand the concerns surrounding e-cigarettes.  The onus is on the provincial government to perform due diligence and offer up some leadership and direction sooner rather than later.”
