Double Fatality at Nairn Centre

The Ontario Provincial Police in Espanola responded to a motor vehicle collision which occurred at 7:30 a.m. this morning on Highway 17, Lorne Township, City of Greater Sudbury, one (1) kilometre east of Nairn Centre near Wabagishik Road.

At this time, it appears that an eastbound Volvo car with three female occupants crossed the centre line and collided head on with a westbound mini van with one occupant.

The driver and front passenger in the Volvo were both pronounced dead at the scene while the rear passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and was air lifted to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury where she is listed in serious condition. Fire Departments from Nairn Township and Greater Sudbury both responded to the scene.

The female driver of the mini van was transported to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury by land ambulance and is also listed in serious condition.

The names of the deceased are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin. A post mortem on the driver is scheduled for September 20th, 2006 in Sault Ste. Marie.

An OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator along with a Reconstructionist attended the scene to assist with the investigation which is continuing.

The highway was re-opened to traffic at 1:00 p.m.
