ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS - The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind boaters to have a safe and fun boating season. The ice is off the lakes and rivers now and people are starting to get ready for another boating season.

Remember when you are getting ready to go out on the water certain equipment is required on a boat.

Marine operators must carry a pleasure craft licence on board their boat if the engine power is greater than 10 horsepower. The operator must also carry a personal identification such as a drivers licence.

Boating is fun, but nearly one hundred and fifty people die annually and many more get seriously hurt in boating incidents. This can be avoided if a person is properly prepared for an emergency.

Here are some tips to follow before heading out on the water.

 Check your boat and motor over before heading out on the water for any problems

 Check the weather conditions before leaving for your trip

 Plan a route and let someone know where you are going.

 Make sure you have the proper safety equipment on board for the size of your boat. A lifejacket, a buoyant heaving line at least 15 meters long a bailer are required by law for all boats, different length boats will require additional safety equipment.

Remember don’t cruise with booze!
