During the month of November, Canadian Blood Services asks Canadians to donate blood in tribute to the military men and women who have served, or are currently serving, our country.

Additional donors are needed this month since in the last few weeks, the organization has under-collected by approximately 4,200 blood donations nationally due in part to the fact that only 60% of donors honoured their appointment to donate blood in the weeks around the Thanksgiving holiday. Over the next 2 weeks, Canadian Blood Services needs 19,200 more Canadians to book an appointment to donate blood.

The history of blood donations in Canada dates back to World War II when roughly approximately 890,000 blood donations were collected from Canadian donors for military hospitals during the last year of the war. The response was so generous that Canada’s voluntary blood system was born. Blood is still used today to treat Canadian soldiers as Canadian Blood Services is occasionally asked to ship blood and blood products to military hospitals.

The need for blood is always constant. On average, Canadian Blood Services needs to book approximately 30,000 appointments each and every week to collect enough blood to meet the needs of hospital patients. This year, over 81,000 new donors will be needed nationally. By 2016, that number will grow to 100,000 new donors annually as the Canadian population ages and some donors may become users of blood products. Blood is used every day to treat patients with bleeding disorders, undergoing surgery or suffering from trauma.

Our next clinic takes place at the Clarion Resort Pinewood Park, 201 Pinewood Park Drive, North Bay on Wednesday, November 6th from 12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, November 7th from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
