The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board has recently been in the news about bed bugs at two of its properties.

According to DNSSAB, the bed bugs have been found in five units of the 106 units at the Golden Age Apartments and five units of the 134 units at the Edgewater Apartments.

As has been the DNSSAB’s practice, affected units are being professionally treated to get rid of the pests. The treatment plan involves regular follow-up
inspections by a licensed pest control company to ensure the treatments have been effective. When necessary, the treatments are repeated until the
situation is resolved.

While they don’t carry diseases, bed bugs can be the source of anxiety and stress. One of the most common ways bed bugs get into your home is
through your luggage after you travel, so a close inspection of your luggage when you get home is always a good idea. Adult bed bugs are about the size
of an apple seed, but it’s important to also remove the harder to spot eggs. Avoiding clutter in your home, regularly vacuuming your mattress, and never bringing in discarded furniture and electronics into your home are some ways to prevent them from entering your home.

Tenants are encouraged to let the landlord or property manager know immediately if they suspect they have bed bugs. This helps to deal with the situation before it worsens, and before it spreads to other units.

Bed bugs can travel through space between walls and through cracks and crevices. Sealing these areas with caulking can sometimes help.
