The trouble with stealing  a bike, then riding it around that area is the victim might see you, and demand it back.

That's exactly what happened Saturday when police were called to a downtown North Bay intersection as two males were involved in a dispute over a bicycle.

Police say that on the morning of June 7, the victim’s mountain bike was stolen from his front porch.

On June 8, at approximately 3:25 p.m., the victim saw the thief riding his stolen bicycle at an intersection in downtown North Bay. The victim confronted the thief and called the police. Police arrived and placed the thief under arrest for being in possession of the stolen bicycle.

When the man was searched police discovered a number of tools and evidence that resulted in a possession of break-in Instruments charge.

Police arrested James Deveaux, 20, of North Bay. He is charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000;
  • Possession of break-in instruments; and
  • breach of probation.

Deveaux was released and will appear in court on June 18.

North Bay Police advise bicycle owners to take a few minutes to not only document the serial number of your bicycle but use your smartphone to take a picture of it.

A quality image impacts the success of an investigation and has a tremendous impact during court proceedings.
