The former BC Rail Pacific Starlight dinner train has left Vancouver for North Bay, according to unconfirmed reports.

BayToday.ca received an email Monday quoting a "railfan" in Vancouver who was referring to Via's train No. 2, which left the west coast city Sunday night.

"Watched #2 leave Vancouver last night (two hours late). with the entire former BC Rail Pacific Starlight dinner train tacked on the rear...27 cars, two units, lots of domes! Last piece of the once impressive BCR passenger service gone, on its way to North Bay and the ONR."

An Internet site titled www.trainweb.org reported that the dinner train had been sold to COE Rail for possible use on Vancouver Island. That sale, the site state, was cancelled and the equipment was sold to Ontario Northland in February.

BC Rail reported in a Sept.16, 2002 news bulletin that the Starlight Dinner Train was losing approximately $420,000 annually. It was taken out of service at the end of the 2002 season.

BayToday.ca will be following this story today.
