Near North Crime Stoppers officials are into the final stages of preparation for their semi-annual Jail-a-thon. This year’s event will once again be held at Northgate Shopping Centre in North Bay, Friday April 27th.

The Jail-a-thon is the organization’s main fundraiser and this years target is $20,000.00. Two years ago the event raised about $17,000 and officials this year are optimistic they will achieve the targeted amount.

Committee chair, Dick Cuthbertson says, “Crime Stoppers has an excellent reputation in the Near North region and as a result we generally have no problem getting volunteers to go to jail. We even have some ‘jailbirds’ who will wind up behind bars at the request of their employees.”

The Jail-a-thon involves spoof charges against so called ‘criminals’ who then appear before a court and are sentenced to raise a certain amount of cash for the Crime Stoppers organization.

The sentencing/court appearances start at 1:00pm and run until about 8:00pm. You don’t have to be a prominent citizen to be arrested. “For example”, Mr. Cuthbertson says, “if you have a boss or a friend that you would like to see ‘locked up’, you can submit the person’s name by calling the Crime Stoppers office at 497-5555 extension 507”.

The funds go directly to the Near North Crime Stoppers and will be used for the general operation of the program, including reward payments to tipsters. Mr. Cuthbertson points out, “The Crime Stoppers organization is funded solely through fundraising events such as this as well as donations. We do not receive government funding.”
