Coun. Tom Mason has announced a plan to create an anti-litter bylaw for the city of North Bay.

Mason explained that council hopes to have the bylaw enforced by the end of 2005.

“We’ll mold the bylaw on a similar basis as the pesticide bylaw,” Mason said at Monday night's committee meeting of council.

Greem committee
The bylaw will promote community education as well as involvement to help North Bay clean up it’s litter problem.

“We do have a problem with litter in this city,” Coun. Judy Koziol said.

Council will also create a green committee to aid in the promotion and enforcement of the bylaw, and other environmental problems that North Bay may face.

Long-term solutions
Coun. Maureen Boldt explained that the committee would “address ongoing environmental issues” such as water conservation.

“I don’t want to say this is current, this is sexy,” Boldt said.

“I don’t like knee-jerk reactions.”

Boldt hopes the committee will deal with long-term solutions for environmental problems.

“People are concerned about our environment,” Boldt said.

Better use
The proposed committee will merge different sectors of city staff, that deal with environmental problems.

“It will make better use of our time,” Mason said.

“It’s a super-committee.”
