Controversial closed Powassan group home up for sale for $2,800,000

The listing features 'a 25-bedroom rooming house with 2 beds per room, offering excellent earning potential. With 6 bathrooms'

Powassan’s Dosanjh long-term care home, a place for people with mental issues, was ordered closed by the Health Unit two months ago over concerns for the health of residents living there.

Its 37 clients still aren't back and now it's for sale for $2,800,000.

The residents are now living at a Lakeshore Drive hotel in North Bay, each with their own room.

The Health Unit re-inspected and passed the facility on Nov. 20 and at the time Manager Lovepreet Singh, in an email to BayToday, confirmed all health concerns had been addressed and he said no mould had been found during inspections.

"Dosanjh Care Residence is open and expects its residents to come back as soon as possible for their mental health and wellbeing. We will continue to serve our residents with excellent services."

That hasn't happened, and now the 9,120 sq. ft. building at 532 MAIN Street in Powassan sits empty awaiting a buyer.

Listed at REALTOR.ca, it's pitched as a "Great investment opportunity in the heart of downtown Powassan! This spacious listing features a 25-bedroom rooming house with 2 beds per room, offering excellent earning potential. With 6 bathrooms, tenants will have ample facilities, ensuring convenience and comfort."

The three-storey home was built 122 years ago and comes with a separate 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom house

Efforts to reach Singh for comment have been unsuccessful so far.

BayToday reached out to Canadian Mental Health Association North Bay and District Executive Director Mary Davis.

The CMHA is responsible for the well-being of the displaced residents.

Mary Davis, CEO of CMHA North Bay and District.

“The well-being of the affected individuals is our top priority, and the temporary relocation plan remains in effect," she said in an email. "CMHA North Bay and District is in close communication with key stakeholders to determine the next steps and ensure the response aligns with requirements. We are working toward an outcome that best serves the long-term needs of our 37 clients. There is currently no set timeline for a final resolution.”
