A rotten 70 year old poured concrete manhole is to blame for that big sinkhole on Worthington Street, Nic Schiavone,

Director of Public Works told BayToday.

It was first believed the surrounding pipe was the cause.

The sinkhole opened up Tuesday evening, causing Worthington and Sherbrooke streets to be closed to traffic.

Schiavone says the old manhole will be replaced with a new precast concrete one.

He expects the work to be completed in a couple of days.

Schiavone says the city sees this sort of thing one or twice a year, but can't remember one this deep. The current hole is almost 20 feet deep, whereas most are only 8 feet.
