BEIJING, China, November 29, 2007 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor, who is in China to participate in a food safety forum, today participated in a roundtable with Canadian and Chinese businesspeople to raise the profile of Northern Ontario.

"The Government of Canada understands global trade is the key to strengthening the economy and creating job opportunities for Northern Ontarians,” said Minister Clement. “Which is why we have committed to fully supporting FedNor, and its International Business Centre, as it helps small and medium-sized businesses explore international markets.”

The goal of the FedNor International Business Centre is to increase the number of firms exporting goods and services in the North. Through its support of the Team Northern Ontario Trade Network and Trade Advisor services, FedNor, in partnership with Community Futures Development Corporations, is helping small and medium-sized enterprises to become successful exporters.

Export and trade are important means for Northern Ontario firms to create wealth and sustainable employment. Northern Ontario manufactures, fabricates and assembles exportready products including wood and paper products, metals and minerals, mass transit vehicles, fibre optic technology and remote-controlled mining equipment. At the same time, outside investment accelerates the development of new commercial opportunities and industrial infrastructure necessary for business expansion.

During his visit, Minister Clement encouraged Chinese investors to consider Northern Ontario as an investment option.

Through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
