North Bay City Councillor Marcus Tignanelli is impressed with the progress at Merrick Landfill where they are building Cell 8.

Tignanelli was taken on a tour of the facilities to get an update on the recent progress.

"In the photo, you can see me standing on layer 2 out of the 4 layers of impermeable clay that will be the base of this cell," stated Tignanelli.

"Perforated pipes that collect the leachate will then be laid, a few more layers of crushed stones and filters and Cell 8 will be open," he said via social media.

"The leachate is collected and treated on-site at the Merrick Waste Water Treatment Center."

Officials say the estimated life span of Cell 8 is 5 years.

The term "Landfill cell" is described as a discrete volume of a hazardous waste landfill which uses a liner to provide isolation of wastes from adjacent cells or wastes.

The Merrick Landfill is located 26 kilometres north from City Hall, off Highway 11 North on Sand Dam Rd in Merrick Township.
