Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming, announced today on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Heritage and Official Languages $47,000 for several projects receiving funding in Nipissing-Timiskaming. Mr. Aspin also revealed that North Bay will host for the first time in a decade a Citizenship Ceremony on Canada Day.

A major initiative receiving funding is the first annual Mountain Rendez-Vous French Cultural Expo being organized by Mattawa’s Meeting Place for the People. $25,000 in funding will be granted through the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program and will be used to develop the expo which will highlight language, arts, culture, and heritage in Mattawa voyageur country.

The remainder of the funding will be divided among 8 Nipissing-Timiskaming municipalities and go towards assisting with their Canada Day celebrations. These funds were contributed by the Celebrating Canada Fund.

“I am pleased our municipalities are receiving support to mark what will be a very special Canada Day this year,” said MP Aspin. “I am very excited, for the first time in a decade our region will host a Canada Day ceremony. This Canada Day 25 of our friends and neighbours will take their oath and make their commitment to being proud Canadian citizens.”

Mr. Aspin revealed that he had been working for over a year to secure the ceremony in North Bay on account of immigration playing an ever increasingly important role in the north as well as the exceptional work the North Bay Multicultural Centre had been doing, which MP Aspin recognized two weeks ago at the grand opening of their new office on Main Street.

“I encourage everyone to come out,” said MP Aspin. “The ceremony will take place at 1:00pm at North Bay’s Discovery Museum and will be open to the public. It would be great to see as many people out as possible to be a part of this very special and memorable experience!”
