New Democrat MPs today elected Charlie Angus (Timmins—James Bay) as their National Caucus Chair.

Angus says he’s honoured to have the support of his colleagues and will represent them with conviction and energy.

"As Canada's progressive opposition, our caucus will work hard to ensure the government delivers the change that Canadians want.”

Charlie Angus is the NDP critic for Indigenous and Northern Affairs as well as the critic for Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario.

The new Caucus Chair is also a musician, writer and broadcaster.

His website says he was born and raised in Timmins and was elected MP for Timmins—James Bay in 2004, and re-elected in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015.

He says he entered federal politics to "stop the continual erosion of Northern Ontario's voice on the national scene".

Maclean’s magazine has named Angus “Top Constituency MP in Canada” and as part of Canada’s “Top 25 Most influential Power List.”

In 2006, the Toronto Star singled him out as one of the 10 most effective opposition members of Parliament.
