This morning, the fire department was prompt in attending to a small fire that occurred in a washroom at Centennial Public School. The fire was a result of a roll of toilet paper being lit.

For the safety of the students, school officials quickly followed the Board emergency plan and have evacuated all Centennial students to Chippewa Secondary School for the remainder of the school day. Evacuating staff and students from the school will allow the fire department to clear a small amount of smoke, caused by the fire, from the building.

Buses will depart at the end of the school day from Chippewa Secondary School, returning Centennial students along their normal bus routes.

Board staff and Ministry of Labour officials have assessed the situation and determined that Centennial Public School will not be open tomorrow, Wednesday, April 4, 2007. Parents and guardians are advised to make alternate child care arrangements for tomorrow.

An announcement about when Centennial Public School will re-open will be made as soon as possible. Parents and guardians are asked to stay tuned into their local media outlets for this announcement. In addition, information about when the school will re-open will be posted on the Board website at www.nearnorthschools.ca and will be available by calling Centennial Public School at 474-8300.
