Science will be the talk of the town from November 14th to 18th in the Gateway City.

For the next week, the city will be the site of a number of science-related activities as part of the North Bay Science Festival, which has Science North as a major managing partner.

Guy Labine, CEO of Science North believes the festival is really an example where Science North can coordinate and work with great science partners here in North Bay.

“They get to learn, they get to have fun, they get to be inspired," said Labine at the festival press conference launch this morning at W.J. Fricker

"Science is an important part of their lives. So the opportunity to a play role in informal learning with the science festival, with the portable planetarium, and celebrate with the great science content partners here in North Bay, is really important so that these kids can be inspired and become the next scientist or at least be literate in science and be informed and comfortable with science."

The week-long event will highlight science, and technology through several activities including Science Olympics, a film screening and speaker finished off with a unique science carnival, which will take place next Saturday, November 18th at Nipissing University.

Labine says it’s important for Science North to run outreach programs like this one, as learning science hands on has a special effect.

“The classroom setting is vitally important to formal education. But we like to think that the ability to have more informal experiences, that are as equally educational, that are equally inspiring and that are fun as well, is really an important recipe to learn,” said Labine

North Bay’s successful robotics program is also part of the event.

“FIRST Team 1305 is delighted to be part of the planning of North Bay’s inaugural Science Festival! This is a terrific opportunity for our team to join Science North and our community leaders in celebrating science, technology, and engineering,” stated Nancy Dewar-Stenning, Senior Mentor, Tournament Director FIRST Team 1305, Near North Student Robotics Initiative.

Overall, the North Bay Science Festival, which does not replace any current school-based science fair, is a joint venture under the direction of Science North in collaboration with four partnering organizations...Nipissing University, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and First Robotics League – FIRST Team 1305.
