After 35 years with the North Bay Fire department, Platoon Chief Kirk Caverly called it a day and hung up his helmet Wednesday.

Caverly's final day on the job was capped off with a special escort home by his platoon and best wishes from Fire Chief Grant Love.

Over the past 35 years Caverly has witnessed huge changes to how the job is done and credits technology to making the job safer including improvements to the face-mask, communication systems that allow firefighters to stay in contact with command when inside the fire.

Following his retirement party Saturday he plans on spending more time at the cottage and traveling with his wife Brenda.
