His popular 1951 novel 'Catcher in the Rye' has transcended generations as teenagers worldwide continue to identify with the novel's centre character Holden Caulfield as he treads the waters of teen alienation, innocence and fantasy.

In a statement issued by the author's son he confirmed the reclusive Salinger died of natural causes at his home in Cornish, N.H.
