Canadore Theatre Arts Professor and award-winning Director, Rod Carley, won top spot in TVO's 2009 Big Ideas Best Lecturer Competition.
On Saturday, TVO announced that Carley's lecture, Adapting Shakespeare in a Modern Canadian Context, which aired on March 28, earned him the title of Ontario's Best Lecturer.
"I am thrilled and honoured to be recognized as TVO's Big Ideas/Best Lecturer for 2009 and to receive scholarship funds for Canadore College. Our Theatre Arts program is only four years old, so receiving this prestigious award from TVO will help bring important, province-wide exposure to this vital and relevant program at Canadore," says Carley.
This annual competition celebrates engaging and thought-provoking lecturers in Ontario. Carley was named one of 10 finalists in February. The finalists' lectures were televised in March and the public voted for their favourite. As the winner, Carley walked away with a $10,000 scholarship for Canadore College.
"We are so proud of Rod's achievements and his leadership in our outstanding Theatre Arts program. He is a passionate and dedicated professor and is very deserving of the award. Rod demonstrates the high caliber of teaching talent at Canadore College and the positive environment for learning we provide for our students. The $10,000 scholarship will be a tremendous benefit to our future students. Congratulations Rod," said Barbara Taylor, Canadore College President.
Rod Carley has been at Canadore College for four years. He is Coordinator of the Theatre Arts program and Artistic Director for the theatre company Rep 21. He has directed and produced over 85 productions nationally and internationally, for which he has won numerous awards during his career.
