'We need to return to a sound fiscal platform based on meeting the needs of the community'

Local businessman Peter Gregory filed his nomination papers earlier this week for a spot on the 10-person North Bay City Council.

He believes councils get elected on wants but good councils get elected on needs.

“We need to return to a sound fiscal platform based on meeting the needs of the community,” stated Gregory.

“Considering the difficulty North Bay has seen in attracting new businesses to the City,” Gregory stated.

“I would like to see those dollars used to help existing local businesses grow.”

Gregory has lived in North Bay since 1967 and has been an active board member with the Gathering Place and Habitat for Humanity.

“I am aware of the ‘needs’ in our community, and as a councillor, I would advocate for affordable housing and solutions to the current relationship tensions between landlords and tenants.”

As a father of two, Gregory feels North Bay has to realize that Nipissing University and Canadore College are two of our most valuable assets.

“The recent funding misunderstanding points out that there is much more which can be done,” noted Gregory.

“Study after study shows a shortage in qualified tradespeople and job-ready applicants. As a councillor, I would like to work with Canadore College and Nipissing University to address this shortage.”

Deadline for council candidates to file is 2 p.m. on Friday, July 27th.  So far the only council incumbents who have not filed are Darryl Vaillancourt, Chris Mayne, and Sheldon Forgette, who is expected to file for the Mayoral position Friday morning.

Mayor Al McDonald has yet to file his nomination papers as well.
