Canadore’s Dental Hygiene students are working alongside registered dental hygienists to provide free oral care to the public on February 9 as a part of a province-wide campaign.

On Saturday, dental hygienists from across the province are participating in the Gift From the Heart campaign which allows community members to receive dental care who may not otherwise be able to afford the services.

Second-year Dental Hygiene students, staff and faculty are working with a local dentist and several registered dental hygienists in order to provide free services to over 30 pre-booked clients.

“This is a great way to promote preventative oral care as an important part of overall health,” said Chantal Pannell, local event organizer and owner of Hilltop Dental Hygiene Clinic. “As a part of this event, students will gain valuable practical experience with real clients while working with practicing dental professionals.”

Students regularly offer free oral cleanings to the general public in Canadore’s in-house dental hygiene clinic as a part of their skills training.

There are over 12,000 registered dental hygienists practicing in Ontario, making it the third largest health-care profession in the province. Canadore is now accepting applications for its Dental Hygiene program beginning in September 2013.
