Canadore College honoured its own Thursday as 170 students were awarded scholarships and bursaries at the 35th Annual Scholarship Awards ceremony.

Throughout the course of this year, over $600,000 has been awarded to students. There were 173 scholarships awarded at the ceremony. Two hundred donor bursaries were awarded in early March.

Linda Franklin, President and CEO of Colleges Ontario, was the guest speaker for the event.

“It’s a great honour for me to participate in this very special ceremony celebrating the achievements of the students receiving the awards,” Franklin said.

“I think it’s a wonderful demonstration of the close ties between Canadore and the community,” she added.
Local businesses and other prominent people throughout the community donated the money awarded to the students. One by one the students were called to the stage to accept their awards which were handed out by faculty members.

Steve Freyer, a third year Journalism Print and Broadcast student, was one of the many students recognized by the college. Freyer was given the Karen Humphrey Memorial Award, which is given to a journalism student who has shown academic achievement.

“I didn’t expect it. I got the letter in the mail saying I had won the award. It feels pretty good. It’s nice to be honoured in front of a bunch of people,” Freyer explained.

“It’s nice that they recognized hard work and dedication in their college programs,” he added.
