Canadore students are keeping spirits high through the “January Blues” with a full-range of activities.
Thousands of Canadians report succumbing to seasonal winter depression when faced with long bouts of cold weather, short winter days and long winter nights, as well as the financial strain of the holiday season.
A group of Canadore students is determined to spread cheer during this time with a host of student-led activities.
“I think it is really important to get out of your shell, meet new people and try new things,” said Emma Nephin, second-year Mental Health and Addiction Worker student.
“Learning is a really important part of school, but as students we have to be sure to have fun while we’re learning.”
All Canadore students are invited to take part in activities like the Winterfest Olympics, a winter carnival, movie nights, nutrition awareness workshops, campus hikes, OHL Battalion hockey, First Peoples’ Centre Community Teach-In, and excursions to the Ontario Science Centre, Royal Ontario Museum, and Vaughn Mills Shopping Centre.
International students are also invited to get a broader taste of northern Ontario living with skating, skiing, ice fishing, dog sledding, and a horse-drawn sleigh ride outings.
“Student engagement is one of Canadore’s signatures,” said Shawn Chorney, Vice-President of Enrolment Management and Student Services.
“Social and personal development are top student priorities next to academic excellence. We believe that creating a balanced student lifestyle will improve the success of our learners.”
All of the events are organized by students for students with the intent of enhancing positive relationships among student groups, fostering a positive attitude, encouraging team building, and raising cultural awareness.
Activities take place throughout the month of January.
