Canada wins tight one over Russia

'Although it was a little bit close we managed to sneak it out'

Canada remains unbeaten after a see-saw battle against Russia this morning. Canada scored one in the 10th with the hammer to edge the Russians 8-7 and improving to 9-0 at the 2018 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship in North Bay.

“That was not my best game for sure but we made some big shots and managed to score more points than them and pull out a win,” said Skip Jennifer Jones.

“It will be nice to have a little break this afternoon.”

Canada and Russia exchanged singles in the first and second before Canada took a pair in the third.

Russia evened the score at 3-3 with singles in the fourth and fifth ends.

Jones appeared to break things open in the sixth when she was able to draw for three to take a 6-3 lead.

However in the seventh, with Russia sitting two, Jones last rock went through the house allowing the Russians to rebound with a draw for three which evened the game at 6-6.

“I was pretty disappointed in myself,” admitted Jones about her play in the seventh.

“I missed a bad one to give them that three back and then I had a chance in eight to score two and kind of give us a little more control in that game so I was happy that I had the chance make a shot to win the game. Although it was a little bit close, we managed to sneak it out.”

In the eighth, the Jones rink needed to go to another measurement as they hoped to draw a deuce, but the measurement went Russia’s way and Canada scored one, which made it 7-6 Canada.

In the ninth, with Canada sitting two, Russian Skip Victoria Moiseeva was only able to score a single with a draw to the button which made it 7-7 and gave Canada hammer in 10 where they eked out a single to win the game.

Canada will play the Italians tonight at 7 p.m.

In other games, the Swedes bounced back from their loss to Canada Wednesday night with a 6-4 win over Japan as they sit in second at 9-1. The loss drops Russia to 6-3.
