Campbell's are the top local newsmakers of 2006

Local media outlets have decided that Allan and Margaret Campbell are the 2006 newsmakers of the year. The North Bay couple, who had been missing since May 1956, garnered 40 total points in the annual survey of local media.

The North Bay couple, who had been missing since May 1956, garnered 40 total points in the annual survey of local media. The 50-year-old cold case was closed with the discovery of Allan and Margaret Campbell’s skeletal remains. The remains, along with a boat and motor matching that of the Campbell’s, were found in Trout Lake in October.

Following the Campbell’s in second place is popular teacher Derek Burke who had a total of 33 points. The 39-year-old was charged with luring a child through the Internet and sexual exploitation in June 2006, and pled guilty to the luring charge in December.

Council as a whole finished in third place racking up 23 points, with Mayor Vic Fedeli in fourth spot with 22 points.

Rounding out the top five was city police officer Sean Burns, who was found guilty of extortion and criminal harassment this year.

Also of note, 10 different people or groups garnered 1st place votes in the poll. They include the Campbell’s (3-1st place votes), Council (3), Patrick4Life's Jerri Clout (2), Mayor Vic Fedeli (2) Health Unit Chair Bill Russell (2), Former Mayor Stan Lawlor (1), Moe Mantha Junior (1), John "Country" Size(1), MPP Monique Smith (1) and Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Whiting (1).
