At its Meeting held on June 15th, Callander Council has chosen to name its newest recreation facility in honour of a well-known sporting figure.

The facility will be formally named as the Bill Barber Complex in order to honour Barber, a Callander native and NHL Hall of Fame member who still maintains close family ties to Callander.

“The choice (of Barber) was an easy one for Council”, noted Mayor Hector Lavigne. “Under our Commemorative Naming Policy, Bill has brought a great deal of recognition to Callander both nationally and internationally. It’s an appropriate choice.”

Lavigne also noted Barber expressed great satisfaction with the recognition his hometown was giving. Barber indicated that he looked forward to seeing the completion of this new facility.

The Multi-Use Facility project is a roof structure which spans the existing rink surface and will allow for four-season sport, leisure and community events activities on the site. It is located behind the Callander Community Centre in Yarlasky Park.

Deputy Mayor Virginia Onley also noted that the Facility is scheduled for completion by late August and the formal dedication ceremonies are scheduled for the last weekend of September. Mr. Barber will attend the proceedings prior to the start of the professional hockey season.
