It was an exciting day for the Municipality of Callander as they celebrated the Grand Opening of the Municipal 'Skate Park' Saturday in its new location the right next to the Callander Community Center on Swale Street.

Mayor Hec Lavigne, who is not known for long winded speeches, summed up what the day was about by telling the kids “play safe and give ‘er.” He also thanked Ontario Hydro and the province for awarding funds that allowed the municipality construct the facility.

Ontario Hydro representatives said they were thrilled that Callander put in the hard work to qualify for the Power Play grant that allows for children’s infrastructure developments like the Skate Park.

Avid boarder Shane Smart, who was part of the Legit Trix crew out for the opening, says having a permanent structure allows kids who are into the sport to grow and progress and get off the streets. Cheapskates owner Barry Klus agrees noting that a fixed park offers a mentoring program for kids.

Following the official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony guests were treated to demonstrations and clinics.
