It appears a petition circulating in the Pinewood area has caught the attention of the city and the Near North School Board.

They are now planning to hold an open house to find out whether the Board’s proposed parkland changes to a 1.2 acre portion of the 17 acre John Kennedy Memorial Park would be considered a net-benefit for the neighbourhood, the school and the community.

Parents, staff, neighbours and members of the greater community are invited to attend to view plans, ask questions and to share their insights and ideas with Board and City representatives at a Community Open House on March 23, anytime between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Bethel Gospel Chapel, 781 Tackaberry Drive, says a news release.

The school board is building a new elementary school on the site of the former Pinewood School, on Cedargrove Drive.

The purpose of the proposal is to provide expanded play and physical recreation area for the students of the new elementary school neighbourhood families and the broader community.

"A Joint Use Agreement would allow the students of the new school to use a portion of the parkland and allow the general public to use the school’s recreation resources. A new public playground with play equipment is proposed on school property. There is no sale of land under consideration, and land designated as parkland will not be used for anything other than park-activities," says the release.

Residents in the Pinewood area can expect to receive an invitation to the Open House in their mailbox next week.
