An early morning blaze gutted the main construction warehouse of Dowdal Cabinets at 248 Birches Road today.

The North Bay Fire Department responded to a call at 5:42 am today and when they arrived on the scene the warehouse was fully engaged.

“This thing was completely involved, the firefighters, due to the danger of backdraft were unable to do a typical interior attack,” says Acting Chief Fire Prevention Officer, Randy Vezina.

“I’m sure that two hours went by went by before the crews were really able to calm down and take a step back.”

Neither the building nor its contents could be salvaged.

Vezina also contends that Dan Newburn of the Fire Marshal Office of Ontario’s presence on the scene is formality due to the circumstances.

“The Fire Marshal's Office has been called in for no other reason than that it is a large loss fire.”

“We are probably up around $750,000, and the Fire Marshal's Office is always called in for a fire of this magnitude.”

Vezina also agreed that with the number of accelerates in the warehouse such as paints, waxes and petroleum based products, will make it especially hard to identify the cause of the blaze. But the acting Chief Fire Prevention Officer they will continue to follow process and talk to the Fire Marshal's office to go over the findings shortly.

“We’ll be meeting with them in about 10 days time, after certain items are studied. And again it’s just a standard procedure of what's going on here today,” he says.

“What happens in a fire of this magnitude is often the evidence that is required to make a most definite finding is not there.”

Vezina says they will continue the course they chose this morning and will go as far as they can in the identifying the cause.
