The 1st Annual Best Buddies Gingerbread House Challenge was a huge success. On December 6, 2006 members of the local Nipissing/Canadore Best Buddies Chapter and engineers from Knight Piesold Ltd. came together at the NBDACL Adult Support Centre to prove their construction skills. Given Graham Crackers and Icing (donated from Lori and Mike’s No Frills) some candy and only 2 hours, three teams competed in a very close battle. The final products, a cottage, a church, and the London Bridge , will be judged at a Tea and Bazaar hosted by the Adult Support Centre December 15th from 11am to 2pm.

This is the first year for Best Buddies in North Bay and the 16 Buddy pairs have enjoyed a spaghetti dinner Meet and Greet, a Halloween Dance, a Christmas Gala, Craft Night and the Gingerbread Challenge. In the New Year there are plans for a Scrapbooking night and a city-wide Dodgeball tournament to celebrate Best Buddies Canada Month in March.

Best Buddies is an international organization that matches students and adults with a developmental disability in one-to-one friendships based on their mutual interests. Buddy Pairs enjoy all aspects of friendship: respect, support, encouragement and fun social events. Buddy Pairs keep in contact every week and go out at least twice a month to do something they both enjoy, like shopping, watching hockey games, taking in a movie or just chatting over a mug of hot chocolate.

The North Bay and District Association for Community Living is proud to be the Host Site for the local chapter and Host Site Coordinator, Julie Weir, says she is very encouraged by the results from this year and has already received many requests from potential Buddies and Student Buddies for next year.
