Bear captured in north end of the city

MNRF call it a 'Textbook Capture'

It took close to an hour but Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry officials say they completed a textbook capture of a yearling male bear cub this morning north of the city.

The MNRF says they responded shortly after a call from police that a bear cub was spotted up a tree at a home on Champlain near the old Trusler school.

MNRF officials were able to tranquilize the bear which then fell down into a tarp and then it was placed inside a trailer where they will let it become conscious again.

They will release the yearling about 60 to 100 kilometres away from the city.

Officials believe the fact it was garbage day in that neighbourhood may have lured the young bear down into the city.  However, neighbours believe the animal had been in the area in the evening before climbing up into a tree.
