The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority has received a second report of a mother bear and cubs in the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area, this time the encounter resulted in the bear bluff charging the man.

The man was running along the Hydro Line when he surprised the bears. The mother bear snorted and bluff charged him, coming within 8 ft of him before stopping and banging her front paws on the trail.

The area has an abundance of oak trees and the bears are in the area foraging for acorns and food.  Hikers, mountain bikers, runners and those using the trails are reminded to be cautious if they choose to use the trails and be on the escarpment at this time.

While dog walkers are reminded that dogs must be kept on leash in all conservation areas, it is especially prudent  for the safety of yourself and your pet when a bear, particularly with cubs,  is in the area.

A sign has been erected at the trailhead at 15 Janey Ave. and will remain there for 72 hours advising those using the trails of the bear sighting.

Be bearwise.
