The North Bay Legion Branch 23 marked the 67th anniversary of the Battle of Britain Sunday with a celebration at the Cenotaph on First Avenue.

The Battle, noted as the largest sustained bombing campaign, was the first fought entirely by air forces. The Battle of Britain was the pivotal turning point in the Second World War and marked a strategic victory, as it was Hitler's first major defeat.

The battle is immortalised in the words of Winston Churchill where he said, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

Today, the Cenotaph was surrounded by North Bay residents who gathered to pay their respects to the brave men and women who fought and preserved our way of life.

“Today we enjoy back to school sales, double doubles from you know where and gripe about road construction,” says Lieutenant-Colonel S.N Lew.

“This way of life came at a cost. A vigilance that we continue today,” he adds.

On September 15th, 1944 the Allied Forces claimed victory over the German Luftwaffe.
