A story in the Globe and Mail says Nipissing University faces an uncertain future if it doesn't look at cutting more courses and faculty and selling off real estate assets.

Read the Globe story here.

It says the threat is declining enrolment.

The 100-page report was by an independent auditor report commissioned by the Ontario government.

The story says Michael DeGagné, the school’s president, will begin holding town halls on the report later this winter.

BayToday will update this story.

Meanwhile Degagne says the pullout from Muskoka is a done deal.

"This has been under consideration since last year," Degagne told BayToday. "Our decision is final on this one."

A student group had attended this week's board meeting asking that the decision be overturned.

Nipissing has been in Bracebridge for 20 years with a variety of programs trying to make a go of it. But the outlook was dim.

"It was created in a different time and was a pretty considerable expansion. Nipissing University led the country i n growth in the early 2000's so there was a sense of real optimism. Demographics are against us now.

"The bottom line is we were willing to subsidize the Bracebridge campus and its losses year after year for a while, but where we are now financially we couldn't continue to do so," added Degagne.

Nipissing lost about $260,000 last year on the campus, not including overhead.

"We were topping out at about 115 students on a campus that could accommodate about 400. We could not afford to sustain the losses."
