Powassan OPP responded to an incident in which an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) went through the ice at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Monday March 27th, 2007.

A Nipissing Ontario resident ventured off an ice road on Lake Nipissing off of Wades Landing, Nipissing Township. His ATV cracked through the ice into open water. The male party was able to rescue himself by the use of ice picks. He had kept breaking through ice until he safely reached the ice road where there is a thicker layer of ice. A volunteer fire fighter and a civilian responded to the male with the use of an aluminum boat. The male had escaped the ice prior to their arrival.

Ontario Ambulance attended the scene and checked for hypothermia. He did not go to hospital.

The OPP warn those who are planning to venture out onto the thawing waterways that ice conditions are rapidly deteriorating – if you don’t know, don’t go!
