Area youth tackling the issue of unhealthy relationships

Delving into what is an unhealthy relationship and to prevent or put an end to one is the focus of the newly formed Youth Advisory Committee (YAC).
Delving into what is an unhealthy relationship and to prevent or put an end to one is the focus of the newly formed Youth Advisory Committee (YAC).

Spearheaded by the North Bay Police Services school liaison officer Constable Chris Johnson, the youth led committee brings students from each area high school together with respective community partners to work on a strategic plan on best practices to help area youth break unhealthy patterns and focus on healthy relationships.

Johnson wrote the grant with the idea that youth would talk with youth about aggression, control, jealousy, an unbalance of power, lack of communication and other issues that make up an unhealthy relationship and then how to nurture healthy relationships through trust, communication and friendship.

Understanding that youth, especially those removed from the mainstream, are resistant to take direction from authority figures the focus of YAC is absolute peer to peer connection.
