Today, on ‘Take our Kids to Work Day,’ Near North Grade 9 students will join hundreds of thousands of students across the country, as they trade in their textbooks and spend the day at workplaces across the district.

The Near North District School Board supports the national Take Our Kids to Work program because it enables the entire community - parents, teachers and workplaces - to play an important role in the career development of our students. It is one of the first opportunities students have to directly experience how people, including their own parents, earn a living. By providing organized job shadowing experiences with a parent or volunteer host, the day promotes the examination of a variety of jobs and what is required to get there. Experiential learning is a great opportunity for students to test drive careers before they make important decisions about their post secondary future.

On ‘Take Our Kids to Work Day,’ students go behind the scenes at the workplace. They take part in a variety of activities that may include: health and safety orientation; learning about a high demand job like a skilled trade; a day in the life of a paramedic; and, much more. Large and small businesses can participate by demonstrating the many varied details that need taking care of on a daily basis to run an operation.

The Near North District School Board encourages students and community workplaces alike to participate in this valuable program. “Our students have been participating in this program for the past 10 years because it provides essential, practical learning opportunities through job shadowing experiences,” said Director of Education, Heli Vail. “It is through the extraordinary support of workplaces and parents throughout the district that we are able to offer students such innovative learning opportunities. The Board thanks all participants for their efforts.”

This ground-breaking program was introduced, by The Learning Partnership, to help students connect school, the world of work and their own futures. Since its inception 14 years ago, more than 1.5 million Canadian students in every province and territory have participated in National ‘Take Your Kids to Work Day.’
