Area receives record funding for northern infrastructure

Ontario is making record investments in the province’s northern highway system including a number of key projects in Nipissing, Hon. Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing announced today as part of the Northern Ontario Highway announcement made by Hon. Michael Gravelle.
“It is vital that northern highways are maintained and improved to help enhance safety and encourage economic development,” Smith said. “In addition to a number of highway improvement projects throughout Nipissing, we remain on schedule to complete the four-laning of Highway 11 by 2012.”

- 11 North Bay - Variable message signs 2009
- 11 Hwy - 11/- 17 northerly, North Bay – 6 km - Resurfacing 2008
- 11 Hwy 534 to Hwy 654 southbound, Powassan – 9 km Resurfacing 2009
- 17 East of Hwy 533, east of Mattawa – 15 km - Resurfacing 2010
- 63 North Bay easterly – 19 km Resurfacing - 2010
- 630 Amable du Fond River, Kiosk Resurfacing - 2010
- 11 Katrine to Burk’s Falls Bypass – 9 km - Four-laning 2010
- 11 Sundridge to South River – - 17 km -New four-lane highway 2011
- 11 Burk’s Falls to Sundridge – 10 km - Four-laning/new highway 2011

A $546-million investment in 2008-09 will continue to improve the safety and efficiency of highway infrastructure throughout Northern Ontario.

“By making long-term, sustained investments, our government is helping to spur economic development, improve safety and the quality of life for northerners,” said Hon. Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines.

Investing in safe, efficient, modern highway infrastructure will be an integral part of the Northern Growth Plan and will help the region spur business development, create jobs and keep people and goods moving.
