A Powassan area man has been fined a total of $2,500 and suspended from hunting for one year for migratory bird hunting violations. been convicted of unlawfully hunting migratory birds without proper licences, hunting with lead shot, as well as making false statements to a conservation officer.

Stanley Smith, 55, was fined $500 for hunting without a migratory bird hunting licence and valid small game licence, $500 for hunting with lead shot, and $1,500 for making a false statement lying to a conservation officer. Smith is also suspended from hunting for 1 year.

Court heard that oOn October 25, 2005, a Ministry of Natural Resources’ (MNR) conservation officer went out to investigating e a tip received from the general public. While investigating the complaint, the conservation officer came across Smith, who said he was searching for a goose his friend had wounded the day before. After an This false statement resulted in an eextensive search, .

Upon further investigation, Smith’s gun, loaded with lead shot shells, was discovered hidden in tall grass. Also found at the scene were several spent shell casings that were matched to Smith’s gun through ballistics. The officer It was also determined that Smith did not possess a valid small game or migratory bird hunting licence.

Justice of the Peace Pierre LeClerc heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on June 20, 2006.

The Court made it clear that it would not tolerate false statements being made to conservation officers, which in this case caused a lengthy searchn extensive investigation to be undertaken.

The Ministry of Natural Resourcesministry reminds the public that it is illegal to hunt migratory game birds without both a small game and a migratory bird hunting licence.
