Corbeil – The Ontario government is investing in the rehabilitation of Highway 94 between Callander and Corbeil, Nipissing MPP Monique Smith announced today.

“Both residents and industry in the region will benefit from the improvements to this important highway, which links Highway 11 to Highway 17,” Smith said. “The McGuinty government is not only listening to the concerns of northern Ontario, we are delivering.”

A contract valued at $6.5 million has been awarded to Aecon Construction and Materials Ltd. This contract provides for the rehabilitation of nine kilometres of road including fully paved shoulders, culvert extensions and replacements, guard rail replacement, drainage improvements, repaving of the Highway 11 overpass, and repairs to a culvert at Lavase Creek. Construction will begin immediately with completion scheduled for this autumn.

“This is one of numerous projects cited in the 2006 Northern Highways Program, part of our commitment to invest $1.8 billion over five years to make sure northern highways are safe and efficient,” said Bartolucci. “We are looking forward to making more record investments in Northern Ontario’s highway infrastructure in this new fiscal year.”

The commitment to expanding and rehabilitating northern highways was set out in ReNew Ontario, the province’s five-year strategic infrastructure investment plan that will help prepare for future growth. The Ontario government is renewing and expanding vital infrastructure as part of its Northern Prosperity Plan. The plan is founded on four key pillars including: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.

“Northern communities depend on our network of highways,” said Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield. “Better highways will improve safety, create jobs and foster prosperity throughout Northern Ontario.”
