OTTAWA - It may not be officially the winter season for another month, but a weather warning in northern Ontario reminds drivers of the hazards of driving in the snow. CAANEO (CAA North & East Ontario) would like to remind drivers that extra caution is needed when driving today, and offer some tips to help ensure a safe commute.

"One of the most important things to pack up is time," says Korey Kennedy, the public and government affairs manager for CAANEO. "You'll need extra time to clean off your car so you can see and be seen, and extra time to get to your destination."

The main cause of motor vehicle collisions on Ontario Highways during this time of year, is drivers who fail to adjust their driving to the weather and road conditions presented to them.

"On a regular basis we hear that it was the fault of the slippery road or the snow, well it is never the fault of the snow or ice, but driver error," says 20-year O.P.P. constable Eric Booth. "Drivers can drastically reduce the chance of being involved in a collision if they slow down and leave more space between vehicles. Winter driving can be safe, but it starts with the driver."

Here are a few tips from CAANEO for winter motorists:

* Clear off all snow and ice from windows

* Before you head out, make sure your wipers are clear and you have sufficient washer fluid

* If the weather is bad, reconsider if you really need to be on the road. Please consider getting the groceries or going shopping when the roads are clear

* Be extra cautious for black ice, and leave enough braking room between you and the vehicle in front of you

CAA recommends putting the following items in a storage container and leaving it in your car all year: flashlight, blankets, shovel, winter gloves, booster cables, scraper and brush with a long handle, first aid kit, pencil and paper (pens can freeze), emergency food pack, matches, a survival candle in a deep can, plus extra clothing.

For over 100 years, the Canadian Automobile Association has provided travel, Emergency Road Services, insurance, and advocacy for its members. CAA North & East Ontario continues to be the leading membership organization by recognizing and promoting its heritage and integrity in the community, while maximizing members' value.
