Nipissing University is more popular than ever with secondary school students as evidenced by a 20 per cent rise in applications, the largest percentage increase for any Ontario university.

January 11 was the deadline for secondary school students to submit their university applications. Overall, 79,568 students applied for first-year admission to Ontario universities, representing an increase of 3,908 applicants, or 5.2 per cent. A total of 3,000 secondary school students applied to Nipissing, an increase of about 500 students from 2006 totals. This data does not represent applicants who are not currently enrolled in a secondary school.

“We are very happy to see such a marked increase in applications to Nipissing. It's a testament to the fact that we are offering a truly fantastic university experience. Students know that this is a place that will help them succeed in meeting their life goals,” said university president Dennis Mock. “Applications are basically preliminary numbers. Our focus now shifts to ensuring that our actual enrolment numbers meet projections. We'd like to expand enrolment slightly and accommodate the increase that is seen province-wide, however, we will not compromise the quality of the university experience here at Nipissing.”

One of the main areas of growth in applications to Nipissing is traced to the new Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE) degree program that the university announced in September 2006. A total of 216 students applied to the inaugural year of that program. Nipissing is capping enrolment for the BPHE at 75 students.

Another program that experienced a large increase is the Nipissing University / Canadore College collaborative Nursing program, which saw a 60 per cent increase in applications. Nursing applications are up 25 per cent throughout the province.
